Plant Envy, by Angela Magnotti Andrews {Read Chapters 1-3}

Excerpt:
He took me home to change, and then I led him to a secret trail, the way to which is now lost in the shadows created by twenty years of memories. I’m pretty sure it was in one of the canyons west of Ellensburg, either Robinson Creek or Watts Canyon. Anyway, we drove far away from the city lights, deep into the countryside. He parked his red Mazda RX-7 at the end of a dirt road, and we climbed out. I led him across a thick blanket of snow to a hidden pond covered over with ice. The air was dense with the tranquil stillness of a snowy night, and the sky shone bright with twinkling stars against a background of midnight blue. Though it was well after dark, we had no need for flashlights. The moon’s light reflected brilliantly off the snow.

The stillness of the night was heightened by the intensity of what we dared not say. While the tender beauty surrounding us offered a measure of peace, the heavy beating of my nervous heart and our timid glances at each other sent crackles of electricity arcing between us. We kept ourselves busy, tramping through the snow, commenting here and there on this towering tree or that snowy mound, pretending there was nothing more to be said. Even back at the car we were loathe to break the spell. We sat there, gazing at the stars, the trees, the still landscape before us. Nothing was said until he reached over and touched my shoulder.
